Defining why you do what you do and what you hope to accomplish are critical to your organization’s success.  The strategic plan clarifies for you and communicates to your employees, investors, and customers the direction you are heading, your values, your goals and how you intend to allocate your resources. 

Your circumstances and decisions on future direction can change over time so it is very important to revisit your Strategic Plan at least every 3 to 5 years.

In our experience, strategic planning is a largely top-down activity that uses information and insights gleaned from a multitude of stakeholders.  The decisions that are made by the leadership must then be validated by and operationalized with those who will be primarily responsible for, or impacted by their implementation.  This is the bottom-up phase of the process.  Findings from this validation phase may require further refinement of the plan at the leadership level to ensure everything fits together properly. 

We tailor our approach to the project by starting with two key questions for each phase of an iterative cycle.

Planning Phase:

  1. Where do we want to go?
  2. How should we get there?

Acting Phase

  1. Are we executing as planned?
  2. Are we getting the desired results?

Monitoring Phase

  1.  Is anything changing?
  2. Do we need to adapt?

Strategic analysis model

The model is deceptively simple, but complete.  It provides a framework to guide your analysis, discussions and decision-making leading to a plan that captures the actions you will need to take to achieve your desired performance outcomes and to implement your plan across the key determinants of structure, resources, culture and systems.  We supplement each of the steps in the model with other types of analytical tools appropriate for your circumstances and culture such as:

  • Strengths/ Weaknesses/ Opportunities/ Threats (SWOT);
  • Risk Analysis and Matrix
  • Line of Business/ Business Unit or Sector performance and trend analysis
  • Driving force assessment
  • Key Success Factors identification; and,
  • Objectives and Performance Indicator selection.
